Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has today given the go ahead for at least £100 million of funding to upgrade the single carriageway section of the A30 between Chiverton and Carland Cross to a dual, two lane carriageway. This is in addition to the Temple to Higher Carblake section that has already been funded between central and local government.
The A30 is Cornwall’s most important traffic route running from Exeter to Penzance. Significant levels of congestion can be expected on the A30 in Cornwall over the next ten years if there is no investment in the road network. The single carriageway section between Chiverton and Carland Cross is prone to high levels of congestion in the summer months and is prone to accidents. This investment will improve the A30 to a consistent expressway standard from Camborne to the M5.
George Osborne said:
‘Because we Conservatives have a Long-Term Economic Plan, we are able to invest in Cornwall, and commit at least £100 million to upgrade the A30 to a dual carriageway between Chiverton and Carland Cross. This important project has been brought to my attention by the hard work of the Conservative MP for Truro and Falmouth Sarah Newton, who has campaigned for a number of years for this upgrade. She has rightly pointed out that this investment will mean the road can cope with the extra traffic of the summer months, and help to reduce accidents.
‘With strong Conservative voices in Cornwall and a government that’s fixing the economy, we are now able to commit to upgrading the A30 and the improvements in road safety and congestion that will bring’.
Mrs Sarah Newton said:
'I am delighted that all my hard work as the local MP has paid off. Working with Nigel Blackler of Cornwall Council, we have been able to secure the government funding necessary to enable this vital improvement to the A30 between Carland Cross and Chiverton Cross. Delivering infrastructure improvements to our roads, railway, internet and bus services have been and continues to be a priority for me. Improved infrastructure benefits residents, visitors, students and businesses alike."
