Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed confirmation by Cornwall Council that they will be allocating nearly £100,000 of government funding to enable community groups to have access to more equipment for litter picks and beach cleans.
Earlier this week, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government James Brokenshire announced a £9.75m fund for councils across England to receive to back their efforts in cleaning up our communities. Cornwall Council was allocated £98,404.00 of this.
Commenting Steve said:
“I was delighted to hear that the Government is allocating this money to local authorities like Cornwall Council to assist in the many community clean up groups operating around the country.”
“I was keen to clarify with Cornwall Council just how this fund would be spent and immediately wrote to them for clarification.”
“I am delighted that they agree with me that this money will be used to purchase new litter picking equipment that groups all around Mid-Cornwall, from Three Bay Wildlife Group to the Newquay Marine Group will be able to take advantage of in their continuing voluntary efforts to keep our streets and beaches tidy.”
“I am pleased that Cornwall Council has made such a quick and sensible decision on this matter and look forward to seeing the equipment being used when I next join one of these groups on a litter pick.”
