Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay has today confirmed the continued commitment of Government to support Cornwall Airport Newquay to be the first horizontal launch site for satellites, as well as a promise from the Minister to visit Newquay next month, following a question in Parliament today.
Speaking in Parliament today Steve highlighted the ambitious bid put in by the Spaceport Cornwall team and asked the Space Minister, Chris Skidmore MP, to provide reassurances on continued Government support for the bid, as well as requesting a visit to the airport.
In reply, the Minister highlighted a positive meeting held with partners last week, including Cornwall’s Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and offered to visit next month.
Speaking after the debate, Steve said:
“I was delighted to get this reassurance from the Space Minister today of continued Government support for the excellent bid put together by Spaceport Cornwall for Cornwall Airport Newquay to become the first horizontal launch spaceport in the UK.”
“As I highlighted in Parliament this bid’s success would have a positive impact on the whole of Cornwall and I was pleased at his confirmation of support as well as his take up of my offer to have him visit Cornwall Airport Newquay.”
“This follows a very positive meeting in Parliament with stakeholders last week and I am confident we continue to move in the right direction to get Spaceport Cornwall ready for launch.”
