Theresa May’s first official visit to the South West as Prime Minister began with a visit to Newquay Airport today.
She met with business leaders, including Kim Conchie of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and Sandra Rothwell of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP to discuss plans for Cornwall's sustainable economic growth.
Sarah Newton MP said: “It’s fantastic that Theresa May’s first visit to the South West as Prime Minister starts here in Cornwall. It goes to show how important our county is to her plans of creating a society, an economy and a democracy that works for everyone.
“Connecting Cornwall to the rest of the UK and the world is essential for our local businesses. I am delighted that the PM has confirmed her support for continued investment into our transport infrastructure with record levels committed to road and rail. Air links are vitally important too. While I understand my London colleagues’ concerns for their constituents, I support the expansion of Heathrow Airport so long as we secure a Newquay to Heathrow service at least as good as the one we now have with Gatwick.
“I’m reassured by the statements made by Heathrow, but my support remains conditional on that agreement being delivered.”
