Conservative Group Leader Cllr Linda Taylor has today challenged Cornwall Council contractor Cormac to explain why it has applied to the Traffic Commissioner to become a Public Service Vehicle operator.
PSV licences are typically required by coach operators who carry passengers for a fee, and this could be a step towards Cormac running a bus service in Cornwall.
This comes after the Cornwall Councillor responsible for transport, Geoff Brown, admitted he did not know about the application or why it had been made.
Commenting, Linda said:
“The Conservative Group on Cornwall Council continues to be deeply concerned about the strategic thinking that has gone into recent decisions about Cornwall’s bus network.”
“Just recently we have challenged the administration over their decision around First Kernow and Plymouth Citybus last year, which has left many college students at a disadvantage, arguing that Cornwall Council owes it to the people of Cornwall to consider how its decisions impact the wider picture with important third parties such as Truro College, before making them.”
“In that matter we have just today had the Cabinet Member desperately trying to deflect responsibility away from himself and the wider council with an email to all councillors which is in my opinion, one of the most monstrous pieces of waffle and “not my fault gov” pieces of work I have ever seen!”
“Now we have Cormac seemingly taking a decision to get into the public sector vehicle operating game while the Cabinet Member responsible and therefore the Cabinet as a whole sits idly by without a clue what is going on.”
“It is time that these contractors are held to account. They are supposed to be acting on Cornwall Council’s behalf and yet we have this absurd situation where the Cabinet Member responsible does not even know what they are doing.”
“If that is the situation for this, then who knows where the rot stops?”
“As ever, it falls to the Conservative Group to hold this mess to account on behalf of the good people of Cornwall, and that is why I am now asking these questions, and demanding answers from Cormac in order that we can see what it is actually going on here!”
