The Conservative Group on Cornwall Council has called upon the ruling Lib-Dem/Independent Administration to do more for members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families following Government push to improve access to social housing for members of the Armed Forces
The government has just published new Statutory Guidance on housing allocations policy for members of the armed forces community. The guidance says "local authorities are encouraged to review their existing allocation policies and revise them, where appropriate, in light of this guidance as soon as possible."
Commenting, Shadow Conservative Spokesman for Housing, Cllr Olly Monk said:
“This recent announcement is an important one, and shows this Government continues in its commitment in supporting and recognising the respect we hold for our armed forces.”
“These men and women, serving or veterans, and their families sacrifice so much to keep us safe, in service for our country, and it is only right that Cornwall Council should do all it can to support them.
“We are asking the administration to review Cornwall Council's housing allocation policy to ensure it complies with this new statutory guidance, which affords greater protection to members of the armed forces community, and pressing them to take this step as soon as possible.”
Commenting, Conservative Candidate for the Newquay Central and Pentire Louis Gardner said:
“In my time in the Navy I have been pleased to see progression taken by this Government in ensuring every Council in the country has signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, meaning there will be no disadvantage to serving members, veterans and their families, because of their service, and that special consideration is necessary for those who have given the most, such as the injured or bereaved.“
“Having signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, Cornwall Council should see now make it a priority to get this review done and make the changes needed.”
